Downsizing: How To Declutter Your Home In Preparation for a Smaller Space

It is so easy to accumulate piles and piles of useless stuff in our home. Without the right organizational skills, it can be easy to acquire a multitude of excess junk.

If you are planning on moving to a smaller space and your home is cluttered to the rafters, you will need to do some serious decluttering because not all of your stuff will fit in your new space, and dragging all that stuff into your new home will surely cost you more money in packing boxes and movers’ fees.

Here are some tips on how to declutter so you can make your move to a smaller space so much easier on you and your family.

Set a day or a couple of days for decluttering

Setting a date will get you one step closer to actually doing it. It could be a day in the week before you prepare for the move. Experts recommend setting a date since this will make the activity more real to you, and lessens your chances of putting it off for some other activity.

Use large, labeled boxes

Prepare large, labeled boxes that you can use to separate the things that need to go from the things you need to keep. You can assign two boxes for each room, one for the stuff you do not need and the other for the stuff you do. This is a great way to organize yourself and allows you to easily carry items out of the rooms.

Take it one room at a time

If your home is full of clutter, the thought of removing all the junk might seem daunting and even impossible. This is the reason why you should declutter one room at a time. Rooms are smaller, manageable spaces so there is less pressure about starting the activity. Start with the bedrooms, since these often tend to have the most clutter, and move to the dining and living rooms.

Get the entire family to help

Decluttering can be a fun activity if you do it with the family. You will also need the entire family to pitch in, since you do not want to be throwing out an item that a family member wants to keep. This way, you get the input of family members, and the task gets done in half the time.
