Aging in Place… Designing for an Older Friend… A Labor of Love

I was recently asked by an elderly friend to help with renovating several of their bathrooms because his wife is in the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s.  They had been living in the same home for many years and he wanted them to remain there as long as was physically possible, making it as safe and as comfortable as possible.

It is projects like these that are a labor of love because I know we can make a difference in their lives.  A few of the universal design modifications that we are making:

  • Walk in tub
  • Walk in shower with seat
  • Hand held showers/ scold proof
  • Grab bars
  • Comfort height toilets
  • Higher vanities
  • Slip resistant flooring
  • Improved lighting

By creating a safer, more comfortable, yet beautiful environment in their own home, it increase the likelihood that they will be able to age in place as to remain independent as long as possible.

I was just grateful that they asked for our help.
